This image depicts a photomicrograph of a thoracic spinal cord tissue sample, revealing degenerative changes due to Polio Type III virus. When the neurons themselves die, Wallerian degeneration takes place, resulting in muscle weakness in those muscles once innervated by the now dead neurons. The degree of paralysis is directly correlated to the number of deceased neurons.
