Caption:
This image depicts a photomicrograph of a cervical spinal cord tissue sample, in the region of the anterior horn revealing Polio Type III degenerative changes. The poliovirus has an affinity for the anterior horn motor neurons of the cervical and lumbar regions of the spinal cord. Death of these cells causes muscle weakness of those muscles once innervated by the now dead neurons.
