This photograph depicts a field team, consisting of Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer, Megan Peck (EIS Class of 2018), CDC epidemiologist, Annemarie Wasley, and local partners. The team was conducting a household survey to understand the extent of mother-to-child transmission of the hepatitis B virus in Sierra Leone, and how well the infant hepatitis B vaccination program is preventing disease in children. Survey findings provided insights to the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation, to determine the necessity of administering the HepB vaccine at birth. The survey also helped to shed light on the risks associated with mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus in other regions of Africa that harbor similar strains.
