Caption:
Captured in Kern County, California, this image from July 1954 depicted a panoramic view of an arid landscape, which was photographed in order to highlight the appearance of a typical environment that would foster the growth of the pathogenic fungal organism, Coccidioides immitis. The fungus is known to live in the soil in the southwestern United States, parts of Mexico, and Central and South America. C. immitis is the organism responsible for causing the disease, coccidioidomycosis, also referred to as valley fever.
