Caption:
This is a close view of a dog’s amputated ear, revealing a cluster of brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus that were infesting this animal. R. sanguineus is a vector for canine ehrlichiosis, and is possibly the most widespread of all ticks. Though normally found almost exclusively parasitizing dogs, it can sometimes be seen inside human dwelling places as well. The specimen was sent to the Communicable Disease Centers, by J.S. Wiseman, from the Texas State Health Department, October 1963.
