This patient presented with facial tetany, involving contraction of the masseter and his neck muscles. Tetanus is induced by an exotoxin produced by the tetanus bacillus, Clostridium tetani, which grows anaerobically at the site of injury. Tetanus is characterized by painful muscular contractions, primarily of the masseter, and other large muscles. See PHIL 2857, for another view of this patient's condition.
