This photographer highlighted one step involved in concentrating a polio environmental surveillance sample, during a World Health Organization (WHO) inter-regional training session, conducted on behalf of specialized poliovirus laboratory personnel in Bangkok, Thailand. Attendees included those from South Africa, Philippines, and Thailand, who are part of the Global Polio Laboratory Network. This concentration and filter elution (CaFÉ) method, employs a concentrated sample, along with a filter elution approach, to isolate poliovirus from environmental samples. Here, being held by the technologist, he centrifuge tube contained filters saturated with the concentrated environmental sample, while participants could be seen maintaining safety protocols, and observing through a biosafety cabinet.
