This image captured in April 2019, depicted Crystal Clements, an ORISE fellow from the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine’s U.S.-Mexico Unit, as she was searching for the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis, while in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, in order to help establish the presence of Rickettsia species in the area. The team, including staff from the Division of Vector-borne Diseases, as well as U.S. and Mexican state and local public health agencies, dragged white flannel flags through vegetation, to attract and collect ticks for later testing at CDC.
