This image captured in April 2019, depicted Marian Fierro (background), an epidemiologist from the Imperial County Public Health Department, and Crystal Clements, an ORISE fellow from the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine’s U.S.-Mexico Unit, while searching for the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis, while in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, in order to help establish the presence of Rickettsia species in the area. The team, which also included staff from the Division of Vector-borne Diseases, and Mexican state and local public health agencies, dragged white flannel flags through vegetation, to attract and collect ticks for later testing at CDC.
