Caption:
This photograph documented the collection of environmental samples from a canal in Cap Haiten, Haiti, using a swing sampler, as part of the polio environmental surveillance program. Polio environmental surveillance was initiated in Haiti in February 2016, but continues to evolve as new environmental sampling sites are introduced to expand surveillance efforts. Polio environmental surveillance provides a complement to acute flaccid paralysis surveillance, and became an important component of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2013-2018 Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan.
