Created by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), this image depicted a dorsal view of an engorged female, Dermacentor andersoni tick, which was in the process of obtaining its bloodmeal, while situated on the back of a human male patient. Note what had been labeled, an unusually intense local reaction, immediately surrounding the bite site. D. andersoni is a known vector for the spread of the rickettsial disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF).
