This illustration, produced in 1965, depicted a fundoscopic view of the right eye, revealing the retina, its optic nerve, blood vessels supplying the retina, and a number of lesions caused by the cytomegalovirus, resulting in a case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis. The largest of the CMV retinitis lesions, included the region of the macula. Note how the retina had atrophied, pulling away from its periphery, and how the network of retinal blood vessels had undergone marked reduction in their distribution.
