This was a photomicrograph of a hair shaft, which had been extracted from a patient with a condition known as black piedra, due to the fungal organism, Piedraia hortae. Note that there were reproductive fungal ascospores present as well. See PHIL 3937, for another view of this condition under a lesser magnification.
