Processed using the hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining method, this photomicrograph of a hair shaft, which was harvested from a monkey, displayed histopathologic characteristics indicative of a condition known as white piedra, due to the fungal organism, Cutaneotrichosporon cutaneum, formerly known as Trichosporon cutaneum. Note that there were reproductive ascospores present as well.
