This photomicrograph of a periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-stained skin scale tissue sample, harvested from a patient with a case of tinea versicolor, revealed the presence of numerous yeast-like, Malassezia furfur fungal organisms. Note that many of these coccal cells exhibited a collarette at one end, imparting what is referred to, as a bottle necked shape.
