Entitled, “Plague in Madagascar”, this image was captured by EIS Officer, Boris Pavlin, MD, in the Special Pathogens Branch, DVRD. This picture depicted a young patient looking out of a clinic window, who was suspected of having pneumonic plague. At this point, the boy was recovering as a clinical trial participant in Madagascar. The man outside the boy’s window was his father, who had carried his son 7km, in order to receive his antibiotic treatment. This photo earned Dr. Pavlin the Third Place award in the 2006 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of People-International.
