Entitled, “NCZVED Studies Plague”, this image was captured by CDC Microbiologist, Brook Yockey with DVBID, Bacterial Diseases Branch, Fort Collins, Colorado. The photo, created in 2004, showed a woman outside her home, in a village in Madagascar, telling stories of how bubonic plague had affected her village throughout her life. The National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne and Enteric Diseases (NCZVED), Bacterial Disease Branch, was conducting a clinical trial comparing streptomycin to gentamicin, for the treatment of human plague. This photo earned Brook a tie for the Third Place award in the 2008 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of People-International.
