Stained using the periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) staining method, this photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by the fungal organism, Coccidioides immitis. These round structures, known as spherules, evolve inside the host. Within these spherules, environmentally resistant asexual cells known as endospores, develop.
