Under a magnification of 475X, this photomicrograph of a hair shaft specimen, prepared using the potassium hydroxide method (KOH), revealed ultrastructural details indicative of a ringworm infection due to the dermatophytic fungal organism, Microsporum audouinii. In this situation, the fungal spores were contained within the confines of the hair shaft, characterizing this as an endothrix infection.
