This image depicts a gross pathologic jejunal tissue specimen in a case of typhoid fever in which you’re able to see how the accompanying cholecystitis caused a perforation of the gallbladder into the jejunum. Salmonella typhi, the bacterium responsible for causing typhoid fever, has a preference for the gallbladder, and if present will colonize the surface of gallstones, which is how people become long term carriers of the disease.
