Photographed in 1964, on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, this image depicted a hand-held, square net, which had netted a group of Marisa spp. snails. The scene took place inside a snail hatchery, that was in the process of raising these snails, which would later be released into the wild, in order to prey on the populations of Australorbis spp., also known as Biomphalaria spp. snails. The Australorbis snails act as hosts to the parasitic worm, Schistosoma mansoni, the cause of human schistosomiasis. The photograph was captured during a Puerto Rican, public health schistosomiasis survey.
