Captured inside a classroom, this 1964 photograph depicted a seated sixth grade class of students, who were about to receive a schistosomiasis skin test, during a schistosomiasis study, conducted on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. The test would reveal the presence of antigens circulating in the test subject’s blood, in response to a parasitic schistosome infection.
