Captured in Puerto Rico in 1962, this image depicted Dr. Frederick F. Ferguson, former Chief of the Tropical Disease Section, in the Ecological Investigations Program, National Communicable Disease Center, Public Health Service (PHS), Bureau of Disease Prevention and Environmental Control, U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). Dr. Ferguson, who was stationed at the USPHS Field Station in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was in the process of collecting snails native to Puerto Rican wetlands, during a schistosomiasis study.
