This photomicrograph of a section of human placenta, revealed histopathologic changes indicating a diagnosis of placental tuberculosis, caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Though a rare circumstance, Mycobacterium tuberculosis mother-to-child transmission, can take place through the blood from different regions of the mother’s body, or originating from lesions within the placenta, as it was in this case.
