Captured in 1965, this image depicted laboratory technologist, James H. Marshall, Jr., while he was inside what was one of National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA), Planetary Quarantine Program laboratories, which was located inside the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), Center for Disease Control (CDC), Phoenix Laboratories, located in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Marshall was shown in the process of calibrating laboratory test equipment, in this case, a number of timing devices. At this Phoenix location, it was CDC’s job to develop sampling and culturing procedures, involved in the control of possible contamination of extraterrestrial organisms encountered during interplanetary, or lunar expeditions.
