Captured in 1965, this image depicted what was the interior of the former Communicable Disease Center (CDC), Planetary Quarantine Laboratory. This lab was contained inside the CDC’s Technology Branch Field Station, located in Phoenix, Arizona. This laboratory technician was interacting with what was referred to as the germ-free isolator, which was used in tests to determine the presence of internal contamination of technical components. Before lab components were placed inside the isolator, the unit would be sterilized using ethylene oxide, then allowed to be aired out.
