This 1963 image, depicted organic chemist, Leon D. Freedman, PhD, while conducting experiments in the organic chemistry laboratory, inside the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), Venereal Disease Experimental Laboratory (VDEL). The VDEL, and Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL), were part of the Venereal Disease Branch of the USPHS, and were located on the campus of the University of North Carolina (UNC), School of Public Health, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In this view, Dr. Freedman was making use of a constructed steam water bath, during his experimentation. The VDRL was later renamed, as the Treponemal Pathogenesis and Immunology Branch of the USPHS.
