Under a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of filamentous microcolonies, of Actinomyces israelii bacteria, strain X-695, serotype-2, which had been incubated on brain heart infusion (BHI) agar, for a 48 hour time period.
Additional Information:
Caused by bacteria of the order, Actinomycetales, the disease actinomycosis, or mycetoma, is a slowly progressive, destructive infection of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, fascia, and can progress to a point where it can affect bone and other organs such as the liver.
