Caption:
This highly-magnified, 1981 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image depicts an Arenaviridae virus, that was a member of the Tacaribe complex of New World arenaviruses. Note the club-shaped projections, 8-10 nm in length, which stud the lipid viral envelope, as well as the electrodense ribonucleoprotein particles, contained within the virus core. Arenaviridae members are zoonotic, which means that in nature, they are found in animal reservoir hosts.
