This historic 1961 photograph, was captured during the dedication ceremony of the newly constructed, Public Health Service’s (PHS), Communicable Disease Center (CDC), Field Station, located in Kansas City, Kansas. At the time, this facility was under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Health, Education & Welfare (HEW), which would eventually become the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1979. At this point in the ceremony, Dr. Alexander Langmuir was speaking at the podium. Dr. Langmuir was chief epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for two decades.
