Captured in 1961, this historic photograph depicted the front of what at the time, was the newly constructed, Public Health Service’s (PHS), Communicable Disease Center (CDC), Field Station, located in Kansas City, Kansas. This view focused on the stairwell located in the building’s façade. At that time, this facility was under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Health, Education & Welfare (HEW), which would eventually become the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1979, and the Communicable Disease Center has since been renamed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1992.
