Depicted in this image was a glass microscope slide, upon which a thick film blood smear had been improperly performed. The smear was too thick, therefore, you are able to see a ground glass-textured ring, inside the unstained smear. For the appearance of what is considered a properly performed thick blood film, please see PHIL 21550.
