The infant depicted here, was a mere 12-hours old, and had been delivered exhibiting this maculopapular skin rash, which had been diagnosed as a case of herpes simplex neonatorum, caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), also referred to as Herpesvirus hominis. Judging from the photograph, the rash included the infant’s right upper extremity, right axilla, and torso.
