This historic image from 1965, depicted a right lateral superior-oblique view of a boy’s scalp. The young patient had presented to a clinician’s office in order to perform an examination on his scalp. From this view, you could see areas of the scalp, where patches of hair had fallen out, and the skin had lost its pigmentation. These pathologic changes, were found to be due to a dermatophytic infection by the fungal organism, Microsporum audouinii.
