Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural histopathology exhibited by a Guinea pig hair shaft, which had been infected by the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In this case, the fungal organisms had gathered both, on the outside of the hair shaft, known as an exothrix, or ectothrix, as well as on the inside of the hair shaft, known as an endothrix.
