This was a photomicrographic view of a skin sample, harvested from a patient’s scrotum, which revealed the presence of a phenomenon known as hyperkeratosis, or a thickening of the upper, more superficial layers of the skin, as well as numerous blood vessels in the dermal papillae, indicative of an acute inflammatory response. The etiology of this condition was not known at the time of this biopsy.
