This image depicted a frontal view of the lower half of a patient’s face, who while in a state of malnutrition, exhibited symptoms of a possible vitamin B2, riboflavin deficiency, which is also referred to as ariboflavinosis. One of the more characteristic symptoms of this riboflavin deficiency, is the presence of what is known as angular stomatitis, which causes fissures, or cracks to develop at the corners of the sufferer’s mouth. Here, you can see the blanched appearance of the angular lesions. At this point, the lesions had entered the scarring phase of their developmental resolution.
