Under a much higher magnification than PHIL 21278, this was a photomicrograph of a brain tissue specimen, which had been harvested from the diencephalon of a patient with Wernicke’s encephalopathy, or Wernicke's disease. The image revealed the histopathologic changes exhibited amongst the neuropil, which included an infiltration of numerous small blood vessels, an overall loosening of the cytoarchitecture, an increase in the number of reactive astrocytes, known as astrogliosis, and sparing of the neuronal and axonal elements.
