Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed changes in the normal conjunctival cytoarchitecture, in a tissue sample extracted from a Bitot spot, which had not been due to a Vitamin A deficiency. This patient developed conjunctival xerosis, involving the drying of the conjunctival membrane, covering the anterior surface of the eyeball. This histologic exam showed how the tissue would appear, had the histopathologic changes been caused by a vitamin A deficiency. The superficial epithelium is characterized by hyperkeratosis, a thickening of the granular cell layer, and enlarged squamous cells containing a large open nucleus, with an accompanying prominent nucleolus.
