This is a photomicrograph of a liver tissue specimen, which had been harvested from a patient admitted to a clinical setting with a case of kwashiorkor. It is important to note, the large amount of fat that had been deposited within the liver parenchyma, inside the liver hepatocytes, as vacuoles. This is known as fatty liver, imparting the look of a sea of lipocytes.
