This image depicted a young child undergoing an examination, after having been brought into a clinical setting, due to symptoms caused by malnutrition, and the ensuing onset of the disease known as Kwashiorkor. Note the characteristic flag sign of the girl’s hair, revealing a light-colored band of the hair shafts, which was indicative of intermittent protein malnutrition.
