This photograph depicted a dorsal view of a patient’s tongue, which displayed a reddening, or erythema, accompanied by a smoothing of its tip, due to a disappearance of the tongue’s papillae. These pathologic changes had been caused by a niacin, vitamin B3 deficiency, a condition known as pellagra.
