Caption:
This was a photomicrograph of a blood sample, extracted from a patient with a case of iron-deficiency anemia. The image revealed a number of malformed erythrocytes, or red blood cells (RBCs), also referred to as microcytes. Note the elongated RBC in the center, known as a pencil cell, which is also commonly encountered during analysis of iron-deficient blood samples. In the upper right corner, an inset depicts three normal RBCs for comparative purposes.
