This illustration depicts a photomicrograph of a specimen, processed using the Neufeld-Quellung test, and reveals a number of paired Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, four of which were surrounded by a halo. In this test, antibodies bind to the capsule wall, and when viewed under a microscope, as was the case here, the bacterial capsule appears to be thickened, hence the halo effect.
