Under a magnification of 250X, this photomicrograph of a liver tissue specimen, revealed histopathologic changes due to a case of viral hepatitis. Important findings included loss of the normal lobular cytoarchitecture characteristically exhibited by hepatic tissue, referred to as lobular disarray, ballooning degeneration of liver hepatocytes indicative of liver cell death, canalicular cholestasis, or obstruction of bile flow through the small canals in the parenchyma, the presence of ground-glass hepatocytes (GGH), a mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate that well visualized here, and spotty necrosis involving the death of single cells, or cell clusters.
