This image depicted the lower right quadrant of a 4-quadrant Petri dish, which had contained Middlebrook 7H10 agar growth medium, and had been inoculated with a Mycobacterium culture. Growth of the bacterial colonies indicated a catalase activity rated at 3+. The enzyme catalase is used by almost living organism to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), leading to the creation of the products water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). With the liberation of oxygen, foamy bubbles are created, and the measurement of the foam’s height, leads to a quantifiable result, as to the level of catalase activity, in this case, a 3+ value.
