Caption:
This is photomicrograph of a conjunctival smear, which had been obtained from an Ethiopian missionary. It revealed the presence of what are known as, intracytoplasmic inclusions, that were located within the cytoplasm of the conjunctival epithelial cells, and by way of their presence, led to a diagnosis of trachoma, a form of chronic follicular conjunctivitis, caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis. See PHIL 20873, for another micrographic view of this specimen.
