This photomicrograph of a skin scraping sample, extracted from a cutaneous lesion from a chickenpox (varicella) patient, revealed what was an early formative, multinucleated giant cell. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3).
