This photograph depicted a close view of a female black widow spider, Latrodectus mactans, as she was poised in her web, while awaiting prey. Note the characteristic red hourglass located on her inferior abdominal surface, which can vary in coloration from yellowish, to shades of orange, red, and at times, can even be white. This female’s body was colored an overall shiny jet-black.
