Under a magnification of 42X, this photomicrograph depicted a view a Trichophyton mentagrophytes cleistothecium. Its outer layer, known as the peridium, was composed of tightly interwoven hyphae. A cleistothecium encapsulates numerous asci, each of which in turn, contains the organism’s reproductive cells known as ascospores.
